One of the biggest breakout stars of 2022 is undoubtedly Asake. After years of participating in Nigeria’s underground Afrobeats scene, the 27-year-old singer from Lagos has recently worked with Burna Boy and published his debut album, Mr Money With the Vibe, to acclaim from critics and a successful commercial debut.
The highest-charting Nigerian album ever on the US charts, Mr. Money With the Vibe, which was released in September, debuted at No. 22 on the UK albums chart. The album was praised as one of the year’s best by Rolling Stone, The Fader, and the New York Times, with Jon Caramanica of the NYT calling it “enveloping and inspirational, gentle but assured.”
Ahmed Ololade, better known as Asake, is a nominee for the BBC Radio 1 Sound of 2023 award, which recognizes emerging artists in the UK.
Asake has gained recognition for his extraordinary – and occasionally chaotic – live performances as his fame on a global scale has increased. He gained notoriety earlier this year for bringing a live goat on stage in Atlanta; this week, he was reportedly jeered for being late to a gig in Birmingham. Later on in the performance, he gave cash to front-row audience members.

Mr. Money’s support tour with Asake Since London is one of the major Afrobeats centers outside of Lagos and Accra, interest for his debut series of international shows, With the Vibe, was very high and all three of the Brixton Academy performances sold out in a matter of minutes.
