The Jerrod Carmichael-hosted Golden Globes comeback on Tuesday was criticized for being “awkward” and “uncomfortable,” but it also managed to restore some Hollywood glitz with Brad Pitt, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Eddie Murphy, Sean Penn, and other A-list celebrities.
The Beverly Hilton hosted the awards, which were originally noted for its outrageous, glitzy glamour and were less formal than the formal Oscars.
However, much as in previous years, the actual action took place away from the cameras, in the crowd at the back of the ballroom, where celebrities and Hollywood moguls could embrace.
Half an hour into the Golden Globes, Rihanna, who is notorious for arriving late to red carpet events like the Met Gala, arrived gripping rapper ASAP Rocky’s arm.
Just minutes after arriving, the pop star lost the title for best song. She was afterwards seen kissing M.M. Kala Bhairava, the category winner. Keeravani, Kala Bhairava, and Rahul Sipligunj are the voices behind the foreign import “RRR” song “Naatu Naatu.”
Rocky started dating the rapper T.I. after Rihanna passed away. Look at the bar hanging in the back. Do you accept tips? the Atlanta rapper inquired of the bartender after placing his order for a whiskey. T.I. took out a $100 bill and passed it across the bar when the waiter muttered that he did.
Austin Butler was greeted on winning Best Actor for “Elvis Presley” by Pulp Fiction director Quentin Tarantino and his wife Daniela Peake in the back of the ballroom.
You appeared on Saturday Night Live, I see! Butler was informed by Tarantino in reference to his most recent role as the host of an NBC comedy program.
Then Butler paired Tarantino, a former cinephile turned director, with Steve McQueen, a star of classic movies, saying he was interested in learning about McQueen’s career.
Peake turned to ask “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann what he thought of Peake’s low-back gold dress as he was wearing it. (He concurs.)
