He said, “I love playing the character.” He also loves the world of Extraction, so he’d be interested in revisiting that world in another sequel. For Hemsworth, it’s refreshing to have “something else outside of Marvel” to return to, with a character and story that have roots “in the real world.” After claiming that Extraction 2 is a better movie than the first one, Hemsworth said, “We’d be remiss not to have a crack at another one.”
Extraction 3 Release Date
Since Extraction 3 is still in the early stages of development, it doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet. Extraction 2’s premiere on Netflix came just over three years after the first movie’s release date. If the Extraction team keeps the same schedule for the threequel, then Extraction 3 could be released in the summer of 2026, or fall at the latest. The years between Extraction and its first sequel had to accommodate both the COVID-19 pandemic and Hemsworth’s commitment to a new Thor adventure, however. If Hemsworth prioritizes Extraction 3 over Thor 5, it could be released a lot quicker than its predecessor was.
Extraction 3 Cast
Any potential Extraction 3 would presumably star Chris Hemsworth as the series’ protagonist, black ops mercenary Tyler Rake. Making an Extraction movie without Rake would be like making a Die Hard movie without John McClane. However, Hemsworth recently announced (via Vanity Fair) that he’ll be stepping away from movie stardom for a while to spend time with his family, as he has learned that he’s genetically predisposed to develop Alzheimer’s later in life. The actor clarified that he’s “not talking about retiring by any means” but explained that he will be taking “a more curated approach” to the projects he signs up for. Extraction 3 might not make the cut.
Extraction 3 Story Details
Although Sam Hargrave has an idea for where Extraction 3 could go, he hasn’t revealed his story idea — and probably won’t until Extraction 3 gets the official greenlight from Netflix. So far, the Extraction franchise has been following an anthology format with Rake picking up a new black ops rescue mission in each movie. Since Joe Russo is expanding the franchise’s worldbuilding in his script for Extraction 2, the next sequel might not be another standalone adventure; it could turn the series into a more serialized, interconnected affair. Extraction 3 could revolve around a mission with more personal stakes involving people close to Rake.
The Extraction franchise could start to feel stale if the movies keep following the same formula of Rake embarking on a rescue mission. The third entry in an action movie franchise is usually the one that breaks the mold. After John McClane spent the first two Die Hard movies confined to one location in a hostile takeover, Die Hard with a Vengeance sent him all across New York City with a sidekick. Indiana Jones was mostly a lone wolf in his first two adventures, but Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade teamed him up with his estranged father. Extraction 3 could similarly try a new narrative framework or character dynamic.
Whatever the story for Extraction 3 ends up being, it will likely retain the franchise tradition of exploring new locales in each movie. Like the globetrotting James Bond franchise, each new entry in the Extraction series sends Rake to new corners of the world. The first movie took him to Dhaka, Bangladesh, while the second one took him to Georgia. However, if the filmmakers wanted to shake things up and subvert the expectations of an Extraction movie, then Extraction 3 could see Rake battling villains on his home turf in Australia.
