Denzel Washington Takes a Spiritual Leap, Becomes Minister at 69.
Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington was baptized and became a minister on Saturday, December 21.
In the New York neighborhood of Harlem, the 69-year-old Hollywood icon was baptized at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ. Additionally, he was granted a minister license, allowing him to be ordained in the future.
Washington, dressed in a grey T-shirt and black sweatpants, attended the event which was live-streamed on Facebook. Just days before turning 70, he spoke about embracing his new faith, noting that although it took time, his journey led him to this point.
“In one week I turn 70. It took a while, but I’m here. If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit,” he said.
Pauletta Washington, his wife, was also present and expressed her pride in her husband’s spiritual development.
“Forty-six years later, here I am, still standing next to him as only God will have it. So I’m very proud of you. You are the head of our house and you have set a great example for our children, who are now adult children who know the difference because we have shown them the difference,” she stated.
