17-year-old daughter of the school’s athletic director passes away on the field during a game. On Friday, September 29, Breanne McKean, a senior at Mapleton High School in Ashland, Ohio, sadly died while participating in school activities. The 17-year-old passed out on the football field after being revealed as a Homecoming Queen contender during the event.
McKean’s demise, according to Mapleton Local Schools, was brought on by an unidentified “medical emergency.” Breanne’s father, Tim McKean, who is also the sports director at the Ohio high school, explained that his daughter passed out on the field before the Mounties’ game against South Central. Breanne was subsequently taken to Ashland Hospital where, regrettably, she was later declared dead.
Tim said that his daughter was “the world to us” and had a significant influence on many lives. He added that Breanne had received varsity letters in basketball, volleyball, and softball, among other sports. According to The Ashland Source, after learning of Breanne’s passing, head coaches Derek Fisher of South Central and Matt Stafford of Mapleton decided to halt the football game at halftime.
How did Breanne McKean die?
The teen’s body was sent to Lucas County for a post-mortem examination, according to Jenny Taylor, an investigator with the Ashland County Coroner’s Office. The Mapleton school system expressed its sincere condolences for McKean’s loss by saying, “Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with the McKean family, friends, and the Mapleton community.”
Further stated in the district’s Facebook post was that “Mapleton staff and grief counselors were readily available to offer comfort and assistance following this heartbreaking news.” The message expressed appreciation for the generosity and support shown that evening by the South-Central neighborhood, including the administration, coaches, players, and supporters.
The community of Mapleton and nearby school districts and localities were also thanked in the statement for their unwavering support, words of encouragement, and prayers throughout this trying time. Counseling services will be provided on Monday to help individuals affected by this unfortunate tragedy, according to officials.
The homecoming dance and other Mapleton sporting events have been postponed until Wednesday in response to the terrible incident. The dance had been scheduled for the day following the tragedy. The week’s games and a camp for young volleyball players that were scheduled have been canceled, according to a statement from the girls’ volleyball team, which McKean was a part of.
