His manager Patrick McMinn disclosed that Roundtree had received a pancreatic cancer diagnosis two months earlier and had battled the disease for a brief time before passing away.

On July 9, 1942, Richard was born in New Rochelle, New York, in the United States. He played football for the New Rochelle High School team when he was a young actor. He completed his education in 1961. Richard was given a scholarship to the University of Southern Illinois because of his love of football, and there he briefly tried out for modeling. Returning to New York City, he joined the Black Ensemble Company to start his theatrical career.
