Afrobeats diva Tiwa Savage is standing her ground against critics who often target her for wearing bikinis.
Recently, Tiwa Savage addressed the constant backlash she faces for her choice of revealing outfits, especially from those who believe her age should dictate her wardrobe.
During an appearance on the Receipts podcast, Savage expressed her frustration with the double standards she encounters. While international stars like Beyoncé are celebrated for their beauty and style in their 40s, Savage pointed out that she often faces age-shaming from Nigerians instead.
“They age-shame me every single day,” she revealed. “They say, a woman of you age, how can you be wearing a bikini? I can because I have a body.”
Savage also pointed out the stark contrast in cultural reactions, citing how Americans celebrate older women who maintain their youthful looks. “Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis but Americans don’t age shame her. They would be like, for her age, black don’t crack. It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.”
The criticism doesn’t stop there. Savage shared that detractors often bring up her son, suggesting he might feel ashamed of her photos in the future. However, she shut down that narrative, declaring, “My son is going to be like, my mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.”
