Nigerians knock VDM over alleged money theft prank.
Controversial social media personality Martins Otse, also known as VDM for Verydarkman, faced severe criticism this week for claiming that his alarm about N180m missing from his NGO’s account was a ‘prank’ on Nigerians.
In a social media post, he stated, ’80 percent of social media users are dumb. The N180m incident was a clear opportunity to show this. I did it to prove how easily misled people can be. No money is missing; my money is safe.’
His remarks sparked outrage, with many condemning him for trivializing a serious matter and insulting people’s intelligence. Some even suggested that VDM had ulterior motives regarding the money but changed his plans due to the backlash.
Earlier, many Nigerians, including Don Jazzy, had donated millions to VDM’s NGO to improve public education in Nigeria.
Comedian and former Big Brother Naija contestant Dee One announced plans to petition the Inspector General of Police to investigate the missing money claims. He criticized VDM for causing tension and distress within the Nigerian community in Ghana and impacting Zenith Bank, where the account is held. Dee One urged VDM to release a bank statement.
Social media user Kola Jinadu condemned VDM’s actions as highly insensitive, demanding accountability for the funds donated. He questioned VDM’s credibility and trustworthiness.
Another user, MaryJane Ocholo, highlighted the fear and panic caused by VDM’s prank, calling it thoughtless and irresponsible. She emphasized the negative impact on people’s trust in banks.”
